What are the benefits of making your own raw vegan breakfast?
The fact that your home-made raw vegan breakfast tastes delicious is not the only reason why you should give it a go.
The raw vegan granola we’ll be making together has many health benefits too, as it’s more natural and more nutritious than most of the pre-made ones.
Here is why it’s better for you:
Most store bought granolas are often loaded with sugar. You may not realise this when you eat them, but by the time you finish your bowl of cereals, you’ll have already had 2 or 3 of your 6 daily teaspoons of sugar.
Some store-bought granolas can be quite high in added fat. However, you can easily replace oil with natural (and good!) fat from whole nuts such as walnuts, almonds or peanuts instead.
Your home-made granola is high in fibre and has a low glycaemic index (GI). That means that you’ll stay fuller for longer and that will also help you boost your immune system.
Most pre-made granolas contain added salt, but luckily you don’t need salt at all to make a decadent granola.
When you make your own raw vegan granola and eat it freshly made, you’ll get more nutrition out of it. That’s because when food is made months or years in advance, some of the more fragile nutrients such as vitamins C and E are quickly lost.
Your home-made granola will be completely free from artificial flavourings, sweeteners or colourings.
How to make a delicious raw vegan breakfast
Here are the easy steps you should follow to create a decadent raw vegan granola:
STEP 1: choose the nuts. What do you feel like today? Peanuts, almonds, walnuts? Just choose the ones that you prefer.
STEP 2: add the cereals. Oats, especially the old-fashioned or whole grain version, are always a good option. Quinoa or millet flakes would work well too.
Place all these ingredients in a food processor and blend them very roughly. Place in a bowl and set aside.
STEP 3: let’s add some dried fruit to increase the fibre, vitamin and mineral content of your breakfast, as well as to sweeten your granola naturally. It will be easier to blend dried fruits if you pre-soak them for 5-10 minutes in warm water (you can skip this if you don’t have time).
Place it in the blender.
STEP 4: let’s add a little bit of oil and syrup.
Blend the dried fruit, coconut oil and syrup together until smooth. Combine with the nuts and cereals and mix well.
